Public social practice installations: Avocado Rush

My most recent art installation, The Avocado Rush, was a part of the LA Times Food Bowl at The Broad Museum's restaurant, Otium. Hosting a dinner with celebrity chefs, our panel on the geopolitics of the avocado and environmental implications of trends in food was watched by 100,000+ on Instagram Live. Our charity partner was LA Compost, in honor of Compost Awareness Week.

In an attempt to educate and empower foodies, I documented on instagram the two month process of collecting avocado pits from 15 of LA’s top restaurants, drying them, dying them gold, and creating an outdoor sculpture in downtown LA, adjacent to the historic Produce District. I had over 100,000 impressions, directly with avocado lovers and food enthusiasts, helping to share the complex story behind everyone’s favorite fruit. Our fact sheet can be found here.

I concepted the project from start to finish, of course with support from my restaurant partners and The Broad’s Otium, as well as many friends who helped. I look forward to working on more projects like this in the future.
